Monteverde Leads All-State Baseball Picks
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Freshman pitcher Patrick Monteverde has been named State Rookie of the Year as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the College Division All-State Baseball Teams on Tuesday. Justin Erby is a First Team All-State pick as Monteverde is joined on the second team by Brandon Kussmaul and Riley Koonce.
Cole Migliorini of Randolph-Macon College was named Player of the Year while Shenandoah University's Colin Morse was Pitcher of the Year. Matt McGuire of Roanoke College was recognized as Coach of the Year after leading the Maroons to the Division III College World Series.
Monteverde is the first Marlin to be named State Rookie of the Year in program history. The newcomer was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year and earned Second Team All-Region laurels from the ABCA. A Second Team All-Conference selection, Monteverde tied for third in the ODAC in wins, with seven, and also ranked third in total strikeouts, with 60.
Erby consistently found himself third in the Marlin batting order this season, capitalizing to lead the squad in several major offensive categories. He batted .389, scored 46 runs, drove in 41 more, and connected on five home runs, all team bests. He also stole eight bases and contributed 22 extra-base hits on the year. He was previously a First Team All-ODAC pick, as well as a Second Team All-Region selection by the ABCA.
Kussmaul is on the All-State team again after being the only Marlin selected last year when he garnered first team laurels. He had an impressive junior campaign, tying for the team lead with 14 doubles while batting .311. He tied with Erby for the team-lead with five triples. His 36 runs scored were third-most on the team while also driving in 21 batters from the lead-off spot.
This is the first postseason honor for the Koonce, the senior closer for the Marlins. The second-team relief pitcher selection finished the year with a 1.29 ERA and seven saves, the second-most in the ODAC. He finished his career with 13 saves, the second-most in Virginia Wesleyan history.
