Late goal lifts William Paterson over the Marlins

DALLAS, Pa. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's field hockey Marlins battled back to find the tying score against William Paterson University, but could not hold off the Pioneers.

The team from Wayne, N.J. scored in the 69th minute on a shot by Jessica Nendze (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) to pull out a 2-1 non-conference win on the campus of Misericordia University.  Senior Courtney Pollard (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) fired in the goal to tie the score in the 62nd minute, assisted by senior Amelia Goeble (Virginia Beach/Mercersburg Academy, Pa.).

While shots were even between the teams, Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) held a 14-9 advantage in penalty corners.  Junior goalieKirsten Olson (Springfield/Lorton South County) turned in an outstanding effort defensively, recording 17 saves.

A day earlier in the season opener against Misericordia, sophomore Tanya Puccio (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) scored in the 31st minute to cut the host team's lead to 2-1.  That's the way the first half ended, but Misericordia came back srong in the second half to score three unanswered goals for a 5-1 win.

Olson finished with seven saves in the loss.  VWC once again held the edge in penalty corners, 9-7.
