CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mikey Connors scored off an assist from Mike Moran in overtime to lift Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse Marlins to a thrilling 11-10 victory over Georgia's Berry College on Saturday.
The non-conference victory improved VWC's record to 3-0, while Berry's Vikings fell to 3-1.
Berry, which out-scored its previous three opponents by a 45-11 margin, took a 4-3 lead over the Marlins after the first period. Rookie Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy) scored twice for the Marlins and Moran (Woowich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) tallied once.
Virginia Wesleyan came back with a five-goal second period however, and led the Vikings 8-7 at halftime. Currier scored two more goals for VWC in the period, Moran added one and Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) and Chad Kooser (Ferndale, Md./North County) tallied one each.
Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) scored Virginia Wesleyan's only goal of the third period, but it was enough to keep the Marlins even as Berry also scored just one goal to leave VWC leading 9-8 after three periods.
But, Berry came back to outscore the Marlins 2-1 in the fourth to send the game into overtime. James Lindsay (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) scored the solo goal for VWC.
Currier led VWC scoring with four goals and two assists. Moran and Connors added two goals and one assist each.
Berry finished with a slight edge in shots, 38-37, but Virginia Wesleyan owned the advantage in ground balls 33-28 and face-off wins, taking 16-of-24. Sam Limpert (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) was 15-of-21 for the Marlins.
Senior Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) recorded 11 saves for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Sunday, March 10, taking on the University of the South (Sewanee) at 1 p.m. at St. Anne's-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va.
