Fourth-quarter comeback vs. No. 9 W&L falls short for Marlins

VIRGINIA BEACH -- An impressive comeback by the Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team fell short Saturday on Foster Field at the Trinder Center where the ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University Generals pulled out a 16-11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.

Senior Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads)scored two goals and rookie Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy) and junior Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) added one each, all in a span of five minutes, to help the host Marlins (4-4, 1-2) cut a 14-8 Washington and Lee lead to 14-11 with 7:33 still remaining to be played.

But, the Generals (9-2, 3-1) produced timely goals by Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J./Delbarton) at the 5:47 mark and Garrett Paglia (Forest Hills, Md./Gilman) at 3:16 to hold off the Marlins to the final horn.

Virginia Wesleyan also started off well in the contest, scoring the first two goals of the game on shots by sophomore Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Currier. Paglia answered for W&L, but the Marlins opened up a 3-1 lead when Pappas scored eight seconds after Paglia.

Sophomore Devyn Kelly (Harwood, Md./Southern) beat the goalie to give the Marlins a 4-3 lead with 4:10 on the clock, but Washington and Lee came back to score the final two goals of the quarter on shots by Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville/Covenant School) and Tim Werner (Wesfield, N.J./St. Anne's-Belfield).  Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) and Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Swickley Academy) assisted on the goals.

The Generals continued to pull away in the second quarter, scoring four consecutive goals before Pappas tallied for VWC off a feed from Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River)to trim the Generals' halftime lead to 9-5.

Pappas also scored the first goal of the third quarter, making it a 9-6 game, but the Generals answered with three straight goals to open up a 12-6 advantage.  W&L opened up its largest lead at 14-7 early in the fourth quarter, but could not make it stick.  Virginia Wesleyan ignited the comeback that made it a 14-11 game.

Pappas led all goal scorers with four, follwed by Moran, Currier and Conners with two each. Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y./Chaminade), Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee), Means, Dabir, Paglia, Werner and Hiensohn all scored two goals each to lead Washington and Lee.

VWC senior goalie Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) turned in a solid effort in goal for the Marlins, recording 19 saves.  Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) produced 11 saves for the Generals.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, April 3, hosting Hampton Roads rival Christopher Newport University in a non-conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
