VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mikey Connors scored a career-high five goals to lead a balanced Virginia Wesleyan College offense in a 19-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the WildCats of Randolph College on Foster Field at the Trinder Center on Saturday.
Eight Marlins scored goals and six recorded assists as Virginia Wesleyan started strong and never let up. The victory improves VWC overall record to 6-4 and it's ODAC mark to 2-2, while Randolph drops to 5-7 and 2-3.
Standout rookie Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy) scored two of the first VWC goals of the game and Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) and John Roth (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) added one each as the Marlins opened up a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes.
Andrew Risse (Annandale/Blue Ridge) scored for Randolph to get the WildCats on the scoreboard, but Virginia Wesleyan came back with three straight goals by Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) to increase the lead to 7-1.
Randolph came back to cut the lead to 8-4 by halftime and the teams traded goals to start the third quarter to make it a 9-5 game. That's as close as it would get however, as Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regiona) scored two goals and Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River) and Tim Gunn (Sparks, Md./Hereford) scored one each to help push VWC out to a 13-5 lead.
It was all part of a six-goal run that extended into the fourth quarter as Virginia Wesleyan opened up 15-5 advantage with 13:43 remaining to be played. Stephen Allman (Goodview/Roanoke Catholic) stopped the surge with a goal for Randolph, but VWC ignited again.
The Marlins scored four straight goals to create a 19-6 lead before Bobby Crosby (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) finalized scoring with a goal for the 'Cats.
Currier emerged as the leading point producer, scoring two goals and leading both teams with four assists to increase his season point total to 47, just one shy of the VWC rookie record of 48 set by Brian Fox in 1999.
Moran added to VWC's day with four goals and an assist, Pappas finished with two goals and three assists, Gunn and Roth tallied two goals each and Chad Kooser (Ferndale, Md./North County) scored a goal and an assist.
Allman emerged as the leading scorer for Randolph with three goals. Colton Wood (Chula Vista/Otay Ranch) added two goals.
Virginia Wesleyan posted a 51-24 advantage in shots, led 54-32 in ground balls, and won 20-of-28 faceoffs, the latter led by junior James Alvarez (Fairfax/Robinson) with 18.
Senior goalie Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) recorded 10 saves for the Marlins and rookie keeper Sean Galloway (Shady Side, Md./Southern) finished with four. Cam Davis (Gibsonville, N.C./Western Almanance) produced 15 saves for Randolph.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, April 10, hosting Hampden-Sydney College in an ODAC came beginning at 7 p.m.
