Hull Owns Circle, Plate in 3-0 Virginia Wesleyan Win
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Freshman Hanna Hull dominated No. 13 Kean University in the circle and drove in the game-winning run at the plate as No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan downed the Cougars 3-0 in the first game of the Virginia Beach Super Regional.
Kean looked to get on the board first as Caroline Ratti was hit by a pitch in front of a Emily Sabo infield single. A pair of strikeouts and a foul out ended the threat, keeping the contest scoreless.
The Marlins broke through for three runs in the bottom of the sixth when Liz Bailey led off the frame with a double into the gap in left-center field. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Hull, still with no outs on the board. The Marlin hurler singled up the middle, scoring Cassetty Howerin and Lauren Irvin. A Madison Glaubke sacrifice fly provided the final margin.
Hull (28-2) tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out 14 while walking two.
Shannon McMahon (25-4) was saddled with all three runs for Kean (36-9), giving up six hits while walking two and striking out three.
No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan (47-2) will face Kean in game two of the Virginia Beach Super Regional Saturday at 2 p.m. A win would provide the Marlins with their first-ever trip to the College World Series. Kean would have to defeat the Marlins twice to advance.
