Marlins Down Patriots 5-2 to Force Decisive Game
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Virginia Wesleyan softball team scored three in the first, and two late, to defeat Texas-Tyler 5-2 and force an elimination game for both teams at 6 p.m. The winner will head to the championship series against the lone survivor of the other half of the bracket.
Kiersten Richardson and Cassetty Howerin both walked in the first to put two on with one out. Texas-Tyler forced a pop out to shortstop, but with two outs Teresa Cardamone launched a ball deep over the left field wall for a 3-0 lead.
Texas-Tyler tried to rally in the bottom of the second when Whitney Romero singled home a pair of runners off Marlin starter Courtney Wright.
Wright locked down the Patriots from that point on, going the distance to move her record to 16-0 on the season.
The Marlins added two more in the fifth when Jessica Lindsay led off with a single to left, moving to second on an error. Following an out, Beth Ford singled to left-center to put runners on the corners. Richardson singled in the infield to chase Lindsay home for the 4-2 lead. A walk to Madison Glaubke in the next at bat forced a pitching change.
Howerin greeted the new pitcher with a single down the left-field line to score the fifth run of the game.
