FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's tennis team opened up its 2016 fall schedule this past weekend at the Methodist University Invitational.

The event kicked off Friday afternoon with doubles. Sophomore Katie Staman and freshman Courtney Gulihur went 1-2 on the day in the No. 2 doubles flight.  In the first round they fell to Barton College and Methodist 8-1 and 8-5 respectively. Friday evening, Staman and Gulihur defeated Guilford College 8-0 for seventh place on the day. Overall, the Marlins went 1-4 in doubles on Friday.

Singles kicked off early Saturday morning with everyone playing two matches. In the No. 2 singles flight, Gulihur fell to Barton's Julie Gonzalez in a competitive 6-1, 6-2 match.  Gulihur went on to win her second match of the day 6-0, 6-1 over Guilford's Miracle Walthers.

In the No. 5 flight, Staman dropped her first match to Riley Zopp of Methodist 6-2, 6-0. In her second match Staman took down Stephanie Johnson of Hollins 6-2, 6-0.

In the No. 8 flight, both Abby Horgan and Jacklyn Cheely won their first match leading them into the semifinals. In the semis, Horgan pulled out a tough 7-6, 6-4 win over Abby Weisler of Methodist.  In the other semi, Cheely dropped a close three-set match to Methodist's Sam Carr 4-6, 6-2, 10-3. Freshman Gabriella Copeland dropped both of her first two matches on Saturday.

Singles play wrapped up on Sunday in all flights. In the No. 2 singles flight, Gulihur finished fifth with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Katie Claggett of Guilford.  In the No. 8 flight, Horgan finished second after falling to Carr 6-1, 6-1.

"The girls played hard this weekend.  It was really hot on the court and the matches were competitive.  We needed this experience to become better prepared for ITA's which is coming up in a couple of weeks", said head coach Marty Perry.

Next up for the women will be the ITA Regional Championships which will be held at the University of Mary Washington September 23-25.
