VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball Marlins closed their own invitational the same way they opened it, with a victory.
VWC closed the tournament with a 3-1 victory over New Jersey's Fairleigh Dickinson University to finish 2-2 in the event. Texas's McMurry University placed first with a 4-0 record, while VWC, FDU, New York's Union College, and Illinois' Benedictine University all finished 2-2. Hollins University finished 0-4.
The Marlins opened with a 25-13 win over FDU's Devils, whoc came back to even the match with a 25-13 win of its own. Host VWC kicked in at that point and took the match with a 25-13, 25-20 win. Junior Kala Guy (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) put down 15 kills to lead the Marlins, while junior Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton) and sophomore Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added 10 kills each.
Rookie Mallory Slade (Burlington, N.C./Eastern Alamance) contributed 22 assists to the effort, while junior Allie Bal (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) added 18. Senior Erin Paton (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) led digging with 14, rookie Jacquie Palaschak (Springfield, Va./Fairfax W. T. Woodson) produced three aces and sophomore Cay Gee (Parkton, Md./Hereford) came through with a career-high six block assists.
The win over FDU followed a strong effort against McMurray, which eked out a 25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21 decision. Guy once again played strong near the net for the Marlins, recording 15 kills. Slade helped the VWC effort with five aces, Bal produced 28 assists, and Paton recorded 12 digs. Allen finished with four block assists.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Sept. 7, hosting North Carolina Wesleyan College in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. at the Batten Center.
