VIRGINIA BEACH -- North Carolina Wesleyan College's Bishops produced the points they needed at crucial times Wednesday en route to pinning a stunning 3-1 loss on Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins at the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
It was NCWC's second consecutive upset win over the Marlins, who entered the match off a good showing against a strong field of competitors in the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational. The momentum from the tournament failed to carry over however, as a 1-2 NCWC squad overcame a 25-19 first-game loss to sweep the Marlins, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-3) was led by sophomore Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) with nine kills. Senior Erin Paton (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and junior Allie Bal (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) recorded 10 digs each.
The Marlins return to competition on Wednesday, Sept. 14, playing in Ashland, Va. against the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams at 7 p.m. R-MC is the defending ODAC champion and co-favorite to win the league's title this year.
