SALISBURY, Md. -- A split with a pair of Maryland teams capped regular season competition for the Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball Marlins on Saturday.
Virginia Wesleyan opened a tri-match at Salisbury University with a 3-1 victory over the Bobcats of Frostburg State University, but fell 3-0 to the host SeaGulls of SU.
Frostburg (15-19) took the opening game against the Marlins, 25-20, but VWC recovered quickly and dominated the 'Cats for a 25-16 win in the second game. The Marlins maintained the upper hand the rest of the way, winning 25-19 and 25-20 to take the match win.
Virginia Wesleyan recorded 14 aces in the match, led by rookie Alex Lambert (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) with four and sophomoreMikaela Whitaker (Gainesville, Va./Haymarket Battlefield) with three. The Marlins recorded 60 kills, with junior Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton) knocking down a match-high 14. Kerry Johnson (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) and Lamert added 10 each. Allie Bal (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) posted 29 assists for VWC and Kala Guy (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) recorded a match-high 19 digs.
Guy led the Marlins against Salisbury (29-3) with seven kills to improve her season total to 336, the fourth highest total in VWC history. But, the host SeaGulls commanded the competition, winning 25-18, 25-15, 25-10.
SeniorErin Paton (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) recorded a match-high 11 digs for the Marlins, increasing her total as VWC's all-time leader to 1,720. Whitaker added eight.
Virginia Wesleyan turns its attentions next to the to Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament, which begins with quarterfinal action on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The Marlins enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host the No. 5 seeded Eagles of Bridgewater College at 6:30 p.m. at The Jane P. Batten Student Center. VWC defeated Bridgewater 3-1 when the teams met in Virginia Beach on Oct. 18.
