Marlins roll through Hollins tournament to finish 4-0

ROANOKE, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball Marlins powered their way through the Hollins Invtational to post a 4-0 record in the competition.

The Marlins won 3-0 over Virginia Intermont College, North Carolina's Meredith College, and Georgia's Wesleyan College and outlasted Pennsylvania's Gettysburg College 3-2.

VWC (7-2) came on strong against Gettysburg's Bullets, who recovered from a 25-18 first set loss to topple the Marlins 25-19 and 25-22.  But, Virginia Wesleyan regrouped and dominated in a 25-12 fourth set win that tied the match.  The Marlins rode the momentum of that win to an impressive 15-6 match victory in the decider

Senior Kala Guy (Fishersville/Wilson Memorial) sparked the Marlins at the net with 20 kills, backed by 12 kills from junior Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), and 11 from senior Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton).  Junior Mikaela Whitaker (Gainesville/Haymarket Battlefield) led the team with 17 kills, senior Kerry Johnson (Richmond/J.R. Tucker) knocked down five aces, and sophomore Mallory Slade (Burlington, N.C./Eastern Almanance) posted 42 assists.

VWC opened with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-21 win over Virginia Intermont, handing the Cobras only their second loss of the season to date.  Allen led that effort with 10 kills.  The Marlins also pinned just the second loss of the season in seven matches on Meredith, knocking off the Avenging Angels 25-23, 25-17 and 25-18.  Guy put down 16 kills in that match, Johnson posted a team-high 15 digs and Allen finished with seven total blocks.

The Marlins closed out the tournament with a 25-10, 25-8, 25-13 win over Wesleyan, producing a hitting percentage of .486, the second highest in VWC history.  It was the best hitting mark since 2005 when VWC finished a .437 against Sweet Briar College.  Allen led VWC with an outstanding .733 hitting percentage, the sixth best in program history.  She finished with a game-high 11 kills and no errors in the match. Fourteen Marlins contributed to the victory.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition Wednesday, Sept. 12, opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition at Lynchburg College at 6:30 p.m.  The Hornets are currently 6-2.

*****Tournament notes: Guy finished with 48 kills in the four matches, increasing her career total to 968.  She is on track to become the fourth VWC player to surpass 1000 kills in a carer.  Allen finished with 40 kills and led the team with 10 total blocks.  Slade produced 132 assists, averaging 9.43 per set, Whitaker recorded 47 total digs, and Johnson led the team with 10 aces.
