Baseball Drops Home Bout Against No. 4 Christopher Newport

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team fell 6-3 to No. 4 Christopher Newport University Wednesday afternoon at Kenneth R. Perry Field. With the result, the Marlins move to 6-5 on the season while the Captains move to 10-2.

It was a tough start for the Marlins as CNU plated three runs in the opening frame. Scoring would go quite for a bit, but the Marlins were able to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Brady Fallon earned first with one out as he was plunked by a pitch. The bases would become loaded as Austin Obenour singled and Jacob Pilarski walked after that. VWU's first run would then be walked in as Jordan McDonough earned a base-on-balls. The home team would then plate another a Zack Clark single brought home Pilarski.

One inning later, the Marlins evened things up at 3-3. Dylan Gentry led the side off with a single and would get to second on a wild pitch. A Daniel Petro sacrifice bunt would move him to third and a Fallon sac fly would knot the game back up. The Captains had an answer though, plating three runs across the final three frames.

It was a pitch-by-staff day for the Marlins as they opened with Robert Cook. He would only go 0.2 before Doug Avery came in, pitching 4.1 without allowing a run. Zach Lubick came in next, tossing a scoreless inning and would be replaced by CJ Morris who would eventually be saddled with the loss. Andrew Lowe and Adam Brooks each pitched an inning to close the game.

Baseball returns to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as the team heads to Shenandoah for a doubleheader with the Hornets.
