Baseball Earns Senior Day Split with Eastern Mennonite

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team split its doubleheader with Eastern Mennonite Saturday afternoon at Kenneth R. Perry Field. The Marlins earned a 19-8 win over the Royals in game two, but fell to them, 12-2, in the day's second game. With the results, the Marlins finish their regular season with a record of 19-15 while going 13-9 in conference play. This also means the Marlins have earned the three seed in the ODAC Championship and will host Hampden-Sydney for a best-of-three series in the opening round.

GAME 1: VWU – 19  EMU – 8

There was no shortage of offense in this contest as the team's combined for 33 hits including 21 from the home side. EMU used a three-run shot in the top of the first to go up early, but Jordan McDonough answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run blast of his own. In the next inning, the Marlins would take their first lead as they plated four runs. Jordan Sprouse and Dylan Gentry both registered RBI doubles while McDonough picked up another RBi with a sacrifice fly. Austin Obenour would earn an RBI the easy way as well, collecting a bases-loaded walk to increase the lead to 6-3.

Runs continued to flow in the third as Sprouse rocketed a solo shot with two outs on. Two at-bats later, Gentry singled home Daniel Petro who was on due to a single. Now up 8-5, the Marlins used a six-run fourth to really expand the lead. A Zack Clark double brought in one run and was followed by a Brady Fallon single that scored pair of Marlins. Later in the inning, Sprouse used a single up the middle to score Fallon while Jacob Pilarski's single scored two.

The runs finally died down with scoreless fifth and sixth innings, but picked right back up for the final two frames. The seventh would produce three runs, driven in by Miles Christian, Sprouse and Petro, while Christian picked up another two RBI with a single in the eighth.

Jacob Pilarski got the win on the mound, striking out nine through 7.1 innings. Adam Brooks would close out the rest of the seventh for him and CJ Morris dealt the final inning.

GAME 2:  EMU – 12 VWU – 2

Runs came at a premium in game two for the Marlins as the home side was only able to drive in a pair. Both came off home runs with McDonough crushing a solo shot in the fifth and Nick Price delivering one in the following inning.

Andrew Lowe collected the loss on the rubber, striking out four through the first 4.0 innings. Noah Riffle, Robert Cook, Zach Lubick, Doug Avery and Billy Welch would each pitch exactly 1.0 innings, respectively, to close out the game.
