GUILFORD, N.C. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team took down No. 16 Guilford, 64-57, Saturday afternoon on the road. With the result, the Marlins move to 7-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in conference play (2-0). The Quakers' eight game win streak was snapped as they fall to 8-2 on the season (2-1 ODAC).
The Marlins jumped out early as Tyree Golston and Corey Pelham each hit 3-pointers to help open up a 10-2 lead just over 3.5 minutes in. The Quakers inched forward, eventually tying things up at 14-14 with eight minutes to go in the first but a small 15-6 run helped make sure the home team would never take the lead in the first. The Marlins would enter halftime up 35-27 on their nationally-ranked foe.
In the second, it was the Quaker offense who was hot, using a couple of unanswered possessions to go up 36-35 at the 16:35 mark. The Marlins would retake the lead moments later, but the score remained close as they passed through the halfway point of the stanza. Tied 47-47, with just 6:28 left, the Marlin began to go on a tear, scoring nine unanswered points. This would all but ice it as the Quakers were unable to make up the deficit once again.
The difference maker was the Marlins bench production as they outscored the Guilford bench 30-8. Leading that charge was Daniel Spencer as his 15 points led the team. Not far behind him were a pair of starters in Pelham and Golston who finished with 12 and 10, respectively.
Men's basketball returns to action again at 3:30 p.m. on December 15th as the team hosts Christopher Newport University for the Cross Bay Rivalry game.
