Lynchburg scores early to slip past Virginia Wesleyan

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's soccer Marlins produced their share of shots on Wednesday, but could not direct any of them into the goal against the host Lynchburg College Hornets.

Both teams finished with 11 shots in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest and Lynchburg connected on one.  It was all the Hornets needed as the host team scored in the 16th minute and made it stick.

Ben Grossfuss (Sanford, N.C./Lee County) scored in close for the Hornets, finishing off a cross from Fredy Flores (Alexandria/Thomas Edison).  After that it was a defensive battle to the final horn.

Junior Connor Kirkham (Centreville/Chantilly Westfield) recorded a pair of saves for Virginia Wesleyan (7-4-2, 4-2-1), and Scott Zaring (Forest/Jefferson Forest) recorded one for Lynchburg (9-4, 6-1). Lynchburg finished with a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Oct. 18, hosting Randolph College's WildCats at 7 p.m. in ODAC action.
