CHESTERTOWN, Md. – A late penalty kick goal by Ikechukwu Etonyeaku helped propel the Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team to its first win of the year as the Marlins dropped Allegheny College, 3-2 on the road Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Marlins move to 1-1 on the season.
Tied 2-2 late in the game, the Marlins looked to push the offensive. A ball sent into the box was knocked down by a Gator hand allowed the Marlins to take a penalty shot in the 88th minute. Etonyeaku calmly took his place to strike the ball, nailing one in the lower right hand corner, sealing the victory.
It was not easy getting there though as the Marlins found themselves in a 2-0 deficit after just 21 minutes. That lead was cut in half in at the 26:17 mark thanks to Jaron Berry who was able to bury home a pass off a corner kick.
Down one at the half, Evan Kastetter was able to knot things up just seven minutes into the second. A long throw from Devin Wallace found the head of the sophomore who knocked it into the lower right side of the goal.
Griffin Potter manned the goal for the whole 90 minutes, stopping three Gator shots.
Men's soccer returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as the team opens up at home against Mary Baldwin University
