VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University Men's Tennis team took part in an ODAC showdown against the Lynchburg Hornets. Due to a potential rain threat, the match was rescheduled from 2:30 PM to 1:00 PM. In spite of this, the Marlins still managed to shutout the Hornets 6-0 to maintain their undefeated record in conference play.
The match began with singles play where the Marlins were firing on all cylinders. Sophomore Mitchell Perry got the ball rolling with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Shawn Ikegami (Kumamoto, Japan) at number 6 singles. Junior Nick Gunther kept the momentum alive with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Vincent Oliver at number 4 singles.
At number 1 singles, lone Senior Paul Gladstone took down Colton Mullins 6-2, 6-1 to earn the decisive 5th point for the Marlins. With a mild drizzle on the brink of turning to match-threatening rain, Junior Andreas Combos defeated Bryce Barber 6-1, 6-0 just in time to tack on an additional point for the Marlins at number 2 singles.
With the win, the Marlins improve to 9-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Hornets fall to 6-8 and 3-5 in the ODAC.
