LYNCHBRUG, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University Men's Tennis team took a road trip through the heart of its home state to take on two ODAC foes in the Ferrum College Panthers and the Wildcats of Randolph College. The Marlins defeated both teams without dropping a court.
The long day of tennis began at Ferrum College's Burrows-Skeens Tennis courts where Virginia Wesleyan's number one doubles team of Mitchell Perry and Nick Gunther made quick work of Panther duo Riley Kern and Houston Murphy in an 8-0 win. Paul Gladstone and Michael Portera finished their match soon after with an 8-3 win at number 2 doubles.
The Marlins continued to dominate the Panthers in singles play thanks to 6-0, 6-0 wins from Nick Gunther and Anthony Wilson at numbers 4 and 5 singles respectively. Paul Gladstone, Andreas Combos, and Michael Portera also contributed with straight set wins.
After shutting out Ferrum, Coach Marty Perry's squad travelled north to take on Randolph in Lynchburg, VA. Despite it being their second match of the day, the Marlins showed no signs of fatigue as they defeated the Wildcats 9-0.
The afternoon began with doubles superiority from Virginia Wesleyan thanks to 8-0 wins at all three positions. The Marlins' dominant trend continued into singles play as Timothy Tep and Andreas Combos were first to finish with 6-0, 6-0 wins at numbers 2 and 3 respectively. The rest of the Marlin squad finished shortly after to complete the 9-0 sweep.
With two wins, the Marlins improve to 11-6 overall and 6-0 in the ODAC.
Virginia Wesleyan Men's Tennis will be back in action on Thursday to take on the Hampden-Sydney Tigers. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 PM at the Everett Tennis Center.
