LYNCHBURG, Va. - The No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team swept No. 8 Lynchburg Saturday afternoon on the road! The Marlins pulled off a narrow 1-0 victory in game one before downing the Hornets 7-2 in game two. With the victories, VWU improves to 27-2 on the season and move to 11-1 in conference play.
GAME 1: VWU - 1 LYN - 0
Runs came at premium in this game with the contest's sole score put up in the second. Kaylah Duplain got things going as she earned a base-on-balls with two outs. In the next at-bat, Danielle Stewart drove a single deep into the outfield, allowing Duplain to round the bases and touch home.
Hanna Hull helped nullify any scoring chances for the Hornets, scattering two hits and mowing down 12 batters.
GAME 2: VWU - 7 LYN -2
Runs came a bit easier for the Marlins in game two as Madison Glaubke knocked a two run shot in the opening frame. Jessica Goldyn earned a lead off single and in the next at-bat, the junior took a ball over the left field fence to give the Marlins a quick 2-0 lead. Glaubke aided the Marlin effort in the second inning as well, collecting an RBI as she reached on a fielder's choice. Later in that inning, Katelyn Biando would knock her in, as well as Beth Ford, to push the lead to 5-0.
After a scoreless third, Virginia Wesleyan tacked on one more as back-to-back singles by Duplain and Jessica Lindsay. The final Marlin run would come by way of Julia Sinnett, whose double allowed Glaubke to touch home. The Hornets would register two runs in the sixth but any chance of a comeback was nullified by solid pitching and defense.
Carla Hall did most of the work from the circle, earning the win after 6.0 innings. Hull cam in for the final frame, closing the Hornets out with a pair of strikeouts.
Softball will return to action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday as the team travels to Eastern Mennonite for a doubleheader with the Royals.
