HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team picked up a pair of victories over Eastern Mennonite Tuesday afternoon on the road. The Marlins cruised to a 10-1 win in game one before dropping them by a score of, , in game two. With the results, the Marlins improve to 29-2 on the year and 12-1 in conference play.
GAME 1: VWU – 10 EMU – 1 (5 Inn.)
It was a pair of five inning runs that propelled Virginia Wesleyan to the win in game one. Things got going in the third as Jessica Goldyn earned a one-out single. Madison Glaubke and Julia Sinnett would follow that with walks, loading the bags for Katelyn Biando. The sophomore used the opportunity to send a ball right back up the middle, scoring a pair of runs. Kaylah Duplain singled in the next at-bat to send in the third run and a single to the center field fence by Jessica Lindsay plated the fourth and fifth score.
After the Royals answered with one in the bottom of the frame, VWU would double its score in the top of the fourth. Biando earned her third RBI of the day as she reached on a fielder's choice and later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Lindsay would send a ball over the center field fence for a grand slam.
Hanna Hull turned in another solid performance in the circle, picking up her 19th win of the season. The junior allowed just one hit over the five innings, while striking out nine.
GAME 2: VWU - 6 EMU - 0
Much like game one, the Marlins used a five-run inning to really set the tone. This time though, it came in the first frame. With Goldyn and Glaubke on second and third, Biando placed a ball into center, allowing both runners to score. A few batters later the Marlins were able to load up the bags for Makenzie Watts, who jammed a ball into center that cleared the bases and gave her her first career triple.
Carla Hall tossed all 7.0 innings in the circle, registering her fifth shutout of the year and her ninth victory.
Softball returns to action once again at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday with a doubleheader against Ferrum.
