Marlins split doubleheader against Cougars of Averett

DANVILLE, Virginia - The No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan softball team split with the Cougars of Averett University in a road doubleheader that was pushed back a day due to weather conditions in Danville, VA. The Marlins to move to 3-1 on the season while the Cougars move to 1-1.

The game was pushed back a day from February 22 to the 23 due to wet field conditions from the earlier snowfall during the week.

Game one began with a scoreless first inning as both teams went three-up, three-down in the lineups. The Marlins found their only run of the game in the top of the second inning as Katelyn Biando scored during Ariana Rolle's at-bat. Biando reached base on a hit-by-pitch and found her way to third following two more HBP's on Kaylah Duplain and Maria Weddle's at-bats. Rolle reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop that advanced the baserunners one bag each scoring Biando for the Marlins. 

The remainder of the game was very defensive as neither team gave up another run. The Marlins left five runners on the bases in the remaining five innings while the Cougars stranded four. 

The Marlins were led by Katelyn Biando with the lone run of the game. Jessica Goldyn (2) and Kaylah Duplain combined for the three Marlin hits. Hanna Hull (W: 3-0) pitched a full seven innings giving up just four hits and striking out six of the 25 batters faced. 

The Cougars were led by Hannah Thompson with two hits in three at-bats. Kaitlyn Aherron (L: 0-1) took the loss throwing all seven innings as well during which she gave up one run on three hits, struck out two and walked two as well as hitting three batters faced.

Game two began with a pair of scoreless innings for both squads before either team found a run. VWU found the opening run in the top of the third as Jessica Goldyn double down the leftfield line scored Makenzie Watts to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. 

Averett countered in the bottom half of the inning as the third baseman hit a two-run homer over the right-field wall to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

VWU knotted the score at two-all in the top of the fourth as a Danielle Stewart drove Julia Sinnett home on a single to right field. 

The Cougars reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sac-fly to center field that scored the go-ahead run. Averett held off the Marlins the remaining three innings to win 3-2 and split the day at one-game apiece.

The Marlins were led by Jessica Goldyn and Danielle Stewart with a hit and an RBI each. Julia Sinnett and Makenzie Watts each tallied a run and a hit in game two.

Carla Hall (L: 0-1) took the loss as she gave up three runs on two hits in three innings pitched. Hanna Hull pitched three innings and gave up two hits while striking out four batters. 

The Cougars were led by Kaitlyn Aherron with one run on two hits and driving in two RBI's in two at-bats. Hannah Thompson (W: 1-0) threw five innings giving up two runs on five hits. Taylor Bailey recorded the save pitching two innings and striking out one batter.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday, February 26, when they travel to Salisbury, MD., for a midweek doubleheader. Game one between the Marlins and Seagulls is scheduled for a 1:30 first pitch time with game two to follow at 3:30 PM.
