Bernal's Overtime Goal Pushes Women's Lax to Victory

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team took down Bridgewater, 10-9, in overtime Wednesday afternoon on the road. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 5-4 on the season and move to 1-1 in conference action. Bridgewater slides to 2-8 on the season (1-1 ODAC).

Alyssa Bernal played the role of heroine as she netted the difference maker just 1:20 into the extra period. Jordan Callahan would win the draw and get it to Ashley Campos who missed a shot, but collected her rebound. She found Bernal who was fouled, earning her a free position attempt. The freshman made no mistake, scorching a ball pass the netminder and earning a big conference win for the Marlins.

The entire first half was dead even with each side cashing in five goals after 30 minutes. Bernal and Liza Holford got things going with back-to-back goals in the first five minutes and after an Eagle goal, Tori Manahan netted one to make it 3-1. Campos would register the other two goals of the half, her second knotting things right near the end of the period.

In the second, things remained in a deadlock. The two sides exchanged goals all throughout the period with things sitting at 9-9 with five minutes left in regulation. A pair of penalties left the Marlins down a player for the final four minutes, but a solid penalty kill was able to extinguish any chances of an Eagle goal.

Campos would finish with a team-high three goals, while Manahan, Bernal and Renee Burt all came away with two. Manahan collected a pair of helpers as well.

Callahan had an impressive day on the restart, controlling six total which led all players. The senior also caused five turnovers, which tied a career-high.

Jordan Moilanen stopped 13 Eagle shots on the day, including a major save in the final minute of regulation on a Bridgewater free-position attempt.

Women's lacrosse will return to action again at 12 p.m. on Saturday as the team welcomes Guilford to town.
