Virginia Beach, VA - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team finished their 2019 home schedule on Saturday afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center by defeating Sweetbriar College 7-2. It was senior day for the Marlins as they celebrated 4 year starter Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA).
In doubles, the Marlins came out strong by taking #2 and #3 doubles 8-2 and 8-0 respectively. At 1 doubles, Marlin team of Katie Staman and Audrey Bally maintained an advantage throughout most of the set until Sweetbriar tied it up at 7-7. In the tiebreaker, Sweetbriar jumped out to an early lead and was able to hold on for an 8-7 (2) win.
In singles, Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to early leads at 2-5, going on to taking all 5 spots while only dropping 4 games collectively. The match of the day came at #1 singles where Marlin's freshman Christine Zalameda (Poquoson, VA) was matched up against Sweetbriar junior Emily Wanderling. In the longest match of the day Wanderling held on in two tightly contested sets for a 6-3, 6-3 win.
With the win the Marlins improved to 9-8 and 5-6 in the conference. Virginia Wesleyan will be traveling to Bridgewater for a key late season ODAC match on Sunday; match time is set for 2 PM in Bridgewater.
