WINCHESTER, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team dropped both Shenandoah and Alvernia University in straight sets Saturday afternoon on the road. With the victories, the Marlins improve to 13-3 on the season and 4-0 in ODAC play.
MATCH 1: VWU -3 SHEN – 0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-19)
Offense came from a plethora of Marlin players in this match with Amber Matalus' nine kills leading the way. Not far behind her was Greta Coss with eight and Elizabeth Britton with seven. Aiding the offense was freshman setter Haley Sutton whose 34 helpers topped all players on the court.
Defensively, Coss and Sydney Collins controlled the net play. Coss finished the day with three block assists and one solo while Collins collected three block assists. In the back row, libero Alyssa Taylor racked up 11 digs while Britton finished with just one less.
MATCH 2: VWU – 3 ALV – 0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-18)
It was another strong offensive showing for the Marlins in the second match of the day as the team hit above a .300 attack percentage in two of the three sets. Coss had a career match as she finished with 14 kills. Kathryn Yeager also performed well on the outside as she ended with six.
Sutton would once again take the main setting role, accruing a team-high 22.
Volleyball will return to action again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday as the team travels to Buena Vista, Va. to take on Southern Virginia University.
