Volleyball Punches Championship Final Ticket with Sweep of Guilford

ASHLAND, Va. - The second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team dropped #3 Guilford, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-14), Friday evening in the semifinal of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 27-7 on the year. The team will now square off against top-seeded Randolph-Macon in the Final which will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Ashland, Va.

The Marlins found themselves down early in the match but an Elizabeth Britton service streak helped get VWU back on top midway through. Guilford went back up 18-17 a few points later, but Alyssa Taylor served up four-straight and the Quakers piled up a couple of errors giving the Marlins set one.

In set two, the Marlins offense went to work as they hit at a clip of .387. Amber Matalus spearheaded the attack as she piled in five kills. Set three saw Virginia Wesleyan continue to bring the offense as the collected 12 kills as a team. The clinching point was a battle but an errant Quaker attack punched the Marlins ticket to the Final.

Leading the offense was Matalus, who totaled a team-high 12 kills while hitting over .500. Greta Coss and Lauren Topper dominated the weak side as the pair combined for 14 kills.

Staying at the net, the Marlins registered nine total blocks with Sydney Collins assisting on seven of them.

Setting duties were nearly split down the middle with Meghan Wood racking up 15 assists and Haley Sutton 13.
